Help Make 2008 Another Successful Year! You are invited to help the RRGCC have another successful year by participating in our 2008 strategic planning process. This process will kick-off in a meeting at Torrent Falls, KY from 1 pm to 4 pm on Sunday, January 20, 2008. Climbers who have volunteered for the RRGCC in the past or intend to be involved as volunteers this year are especially encouraged to come to this meeting. The RRGCC has a strong history of strategic planning and has a well developed vision, mission, and strategy for securing climbing access. In the January 20th meeting we will review what was accomplished in 2007, what our current issues are, and what goals and strategies we will pursue in 2008. Please RSVP to the RRGCC’s Executive Director, Bill Strachan, bill(at)rrgcc.org, if you will be attending the January 20th meeting. Please e-mail Bill even if you cannot attend this meeting, but are interested in being involved in the strategic planning process.
Prior to the strategic planning meeting on January 20th, the RRGCC will be holding a Board of Directors meeting from 11:00 am to Noon during which the Board will elect officers for 2008. The Board meeting is also open to the public. 01/08/08
Rocktoberfest2007, Resounding Success By joining forces with Petzl (http://en.petzl.com/petzl/Accueil), the RRGCC’s Rocktoberfest fundraiser and climber's festival, raised over $32,000 towards the purchase of the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve (PMRP). The event’s fundraising power was bolstered by a $10,000 matching grant from the Petzl Foundation, providing an added incentive for the nearly 1,000 climbers who attended the event to pitch in for climbing and recreation access in the Red River Gorge area. In the end this level of fundraising not only secured the Coalition’s 2008 PMRP mortgage payment of $29,400, but also gave a head start on the 2009 payment. Mortgage payments for the PMRP property must be made every July through 2013 before the RRGCC will own the land outright.

This unprecedented event and level of fundraising by climbers to preserve access made national headlines. This year's Rocktoberfest's philanthropy efforts piqued the interest of NPR's "It's Only A Game" radio program and a segment covering the event was featured on the nationally broadcast radio program on October 27th (http://www.onlyagame.org/shows/2007/10/20071027.asp). Globally, the event generated buzz on 8a (http://www.8a.nu,) a widely trafficked sport-climbing website that spotlights the Red River Gorge as one of the top ten climbing destinations in the world.

The Petzl RocTrip, now in its sixth year, has proven successful in bringing the international climbing community together in celebration of the sport, from New York's Shawangunks, Squamish, British Columbia, Kalymnos, Greece, and Millau in the south of France. Over 35 high profile sponsored climbing athletes including Chris Sharma, Emily Harrington, Tony Lamiche and local prodigy Katie Brown attended this year’s RocTrip. Open to climbers of all ability levels, the 2007 Petzl RocTrip / Rocktoberfest engaged climbers in a festival of competitions, clinics, and celebration while raising funds and awareness for access issues locally and nationally. "We owe the success of this event to the local community - the volunteers, the RRGCC Board, area businesses, and the one thousand plus people who came out and put dollars down in support of the Pendergrass-Murray Preserve," said John Evans, Marketing Director for Petzl North America. "I highly recommend other outdoor companies include this outstanding grass-roots event in their outreach programs for 2008. I guarantee Petzl will be back to support this great cause."

The RRGCC sincerely thanks all of the sponsors of Rocktoberfest 2007, which in addition to Petzl included: Miguel’s Pizza, Prana, Avery Brewing Company, Keen Footwear, La Sportiva, Rock and Ice Magazine, Red River Outdoors, Sterling Ropes, Smart Wool, Solid Rock Climbers for Christ, Paradox Sports, Five Ten, Red Bull, The Warrior's Way, RockQuest Climbing Center and The Access Fund. 12/10/07
Funk Rock Reopened After experiencing a small fire in the area, Funk Rock City is being reopened. Below is an announcement from Tim Eling from the USFS. An official statement will be released soon:

Hello Climbers,

I wanted to let you know that the closure in Clifty Wilderness for a wildfire has been lifted. This closure included the area around Funk Rock City. The fire burned about 18 acres. Most was on the top of cliff above climbing area, but about 2 acres of fire spilled over the top and burned some areas at base of cliff and within climb area. Be aware that debris has fallen off cliff top down into the climbing area. There may be some debris and ash on the access path at base of cliff.

An official news release will be coming out soon, but I wanted to give you a heads up.

Funk Rock City - Temporarily Closed As of October 1, 2007, Funk Rock City is being reopened. Please see the latest announcements for more information.

Funk Rock City is temporarily closed due to a small forest fire in the area. Below is the notice from Tim Eling of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Hello Climbers,

We have a wildfire in the vicinity of Funk Rock City climbing area within Clifty Wilderness. The Forest Supervisor has just issued a closure order for the area immediately around Funk Rock City (about 25 acres). The fire is burning on the cliff above the climbing area, snags are falling and crews are working in the area. The fire is small (< 5 acres) and thus the closure area is small at this time. The closure will be lifted when the area is deemed safe.

Please help pass the word on this closure. Can this notice be posted on the RRGCC & Red River Climbing websites?

USFS interns will be posting flyers at various businesses (Miguels, Shell, etc...) and key trailheads.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Petzl Adds Impetus to RRGCC Fundraising In recent months fundraising efforts of the RRGCC have garnered special attention from worldwide adventure equipment manufacturer, Petzl, Inc. In recognizing the RRGCC endeavors to preserve climbing in Eastern Kentucky, Petzl turned its attention to the Red River Gorge and has provided major assistance in helping us secure climbing in the area. As many probably already know, Petzl has teamed up with the RRGCC to present our annual Rocktoberfest and will bring the famed Roc Trip to the Red River Gorge. With an anticipated crowd ranging from 800 to 1200 people breezing through the Red for this event alongside well known faces known for burly sends worldwide, the annual PMRP mortgage fundraising is certain to get a meritorious boost. If by chance you hadn’t already heard this exciting news, visit the RRGCC web site. As if these developments weren’t already exciting enough, Petzl also mustered additional momentum by nominating the RRGCC for two other grants: one from the Conservation Alliance and another from the EOG Association for Conservation. In recommending us for these generous awards, Petzl helps to promote our efforts of preserving climbing and other recreation in the Red, as well as legitimizes fundraising for our organization on an international level. About the Conservation Alliance The Conservation Alliance (CA) is an organization of more than 130 outdoor industry companies that have banded together to fund grassroots organizations focused on protecting wildlife, particularly in areas where people recreate. Since its inception in 1989, CA has made contributions of more than $5.3 million and in 2007 will contribute $700,000. The RRGCC has applied for the allotted maximum amount of $30,000. To learn more about this organization, visit the 8a, a popular European sport climbing rag), fingers are crossed for the recognition from the EOG Association for Conservation as a climbing and wildlife area well loved locally and internationally. However, the RRGCC’s grant application is only in the preliminary stages so stay tuned for results. Although crowds of this size might detract the faithful weekend visitors and send them packing for a brief road trip, recent news from Petzl might find them back at the Red. Not only will Petzl add momentum with the Roc Trip, but Petzl Foundation has given the Coalition a dollar-for-dollar match grant. For every dollar we raise for the event, up to a whopping $10,000, Petzl will give the RRGCC a dollar!

For those who are still certain they will miss this year’s exciting event, contributions for this event will be accepted through October 14th on the RRGCC web site.

Johnny & Alex Crag Day Details Come one; come all to the 3rd annual John Bronaugh and Alex Yeakley Adopt-A-Crag Day, August 4th and 5th, 2007. Like in years past we will be depending on the Red River Gorge climbing community to come out and take care of the land you own, the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve, in honor of two great men of the Red. We will be building trails, bolting routes and having a kick ass party. This year’s event will be held at the Coal Bank Hollow area. Work will begin at around 9:30 am on Saturday morning and at about 10:30 am on Sunday. People are encouraged to carpool from Lago Linda’s or Miguel’s as there is very limited parking at the Coal Bank area. On Saturday work will end at 5:30 pm and we will shuttle back to Lago Linda’s for a dinner provided by Mark’s Mountain Barbecue along with be free keg beer, live music, tee shirts and free schwag for all that attend. We will also have the slip and slide and volley ball, we just may have to get in a game or two of the infamous bourbon ball. This years’ event will help us with the Kentucky GOLD Recreational Trail Grant we got last year. So bring your tools and bring some friends, we’ve got a lot of dirt to move and payments to make. Stephanie Meadows Joins RRGCC Board The RRGCC is pleased to announce that Stephanie Meadows has become a member of the Board of Directors, filling the seat vacated by Shannon Stuart-Smith. Prior to joining the Board, Stephanie has been an active member, volunteer, and supporter of the mission of the RRGCC. Stephanie was introduced to climbing at Hoosier Heights in Bloomington, Indiana but was truly hooked after she went climbing outside for the first time in Red River Gorge. Her passion for climbing at the Red moved her to relocate to Lexington, Kentucky. In addition to climbing, Stephanie also enjoys running and cooking. 06/18/07
